The Putting Grip To Control Your Putting Stroke

Putting GripThe putting grip is arguably one of the most important aspects in golf that you need to master. The reason for this is that you spend a great deal of your time on the greens when playing golf and most often than not half of the strokes on your scorecard come from putting. So receiving good golf tips and having a solid putting grip is important.

A solid putting grip will allow you to control the putting stroke a lot easier. Having a solid putting grip will prevent the putter from turning too much and causing the ball to go offline. And it will also allow you to have a better feel for your putting stroke to ensure that you control the speed and distance of your putt. There are a lot of golf tips online that suggest other ways to improve your game while neglecting how important putting is.

If you watch golf on television you will no doubt notice that there are a lot of different putting techniques that professional golfers use. Whether this is different putting grips, putting strokes or even short or long putters, it all comes down to personal preference. However I am here to teach you what I believe to be one of the most effective putting grips to use, it is called the Reverse Overlay Grip. This grip is excellent to control the face of the putter from turning, and to control the speed and distance of the putting stroke. The golf tips that follow will have you executing this putting grip in no time.

  • Step 1:
Put your hands on the putter with the palms facing towards each other. Keep your hands open and straight with the index finger of both hands facing down the shaft. Take a few strokes like this to notice the stability of the putter.
  • Step 2:
Assuming you are right handed, slide the right hand down the putter keeping your palms facing towards each other.
  • Step 3:
Take your right hand off of the club and close the left hand around the putter as though you are pulling thumbs up keeping your thumb aiming directly down the shaft of the club. The other thing is to stick out the index finger of your left hand.
  • Step 4:
Wrap the right hand around the putter again. You want to make sure that the palm of your right hand sits on top of the thumb of your left hand, keeping the thumb of your right hand aiming down the shaft of the putter. The next thing to complete the grip is to ensure that the index finger of your left hand is interlocked between the pinkie and right finger of your right hand.

And there you have it; you have a putting grip to control direction and speed of the putting stroke. The key to mastering this putting grip is to keep trying and working at it, it might feel weird at first, but when you realise that a simple putting grip has helped to control your putting stroke as well as reduce your scorecard then it will have been worth every minute.
